Summer Hill House 2
A federation bungalow of Summer Hill was a grade 2 classified Heritage Item, located in the estate conservation area. It had the traditional group of small spaces at the rear offering little connection to the rear private open space and amenity to a growing family. The owners wanted an ensuite bathroom and generous casual living space at the rear, connecting to the private open space. They wanted to provide two large bedrooms and additional bathroom in an extended attic space within a new rear roof extension.
Local council heritage controls favoured a simple hipped roof form, with no dormers, particularly at the rear. The Owners felt the resulting internal space would be too “tent-like” and we approached council for gambrel or jerkinhead roof at the rear, providing a vertical wall for the full height of the room, with a row of windows the full width of the gable end. Both attic bed rooms are generous and the new level includes a central rumpus/ study area and bathroom. (See Domain article in “Media” section)
